The 7th Pratz Medieval Festival

The 2015 Medieval Festival:  Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 August 2015

The village is not a medieval city, there’s no castle here, but just a wish on the part of the enterprising Praz sur Arly Fesitvals Committee to organize a fun medieval festival. Since 2009, this festival has been a huge success, with numerous spectators, which confirms the public interest in this period of history.

Praz sur Arly will take you back to the Middle Ages for two days of shows, discoveries and amazing encounters… Access is free for all the activities (except for the equestrian shows, falconry and the medieval tournament). You’ll be able to eat and drink on the spot in the “Vieux Bouc” (“Old Goat”) tavern or at the banquet on Saturday evening.

 New in the 2015 Edition

The banks of the River Arly welcome the Medieval Festival! In addition to the village centre, the Val D’Arly Road and the Meurets football field, the Medieval Festival will also take place along the Arly River, a shady spot where the inhabitants of Praz like to cool off on hot days!

New troops and companies of the 2015 edition:

Gandalf, the blacksmith. Gandalf’s medieval forge and his giant bellows are an amazing show in itself and a demonstration of unique skill. The fascination of the charcoal fire, improvised sword fights, and ax-throwing will undoubtedly fascinate the young and old alike! Banks of the Arly, free access.

The master cord-maker. Making of string, ropes, cables using a medieval technique. Arly Road, free access.

Mylène’s workshop. Felting of wool. Felt is a fabric made from fibres of wool moistened in soapy water and  rubbed for a long time until the fibres are permanently intermingled. Arly Road, free access.

The magical world of Ivana. Workshop for making dolls and puppets. Arly Road, free access.

The Guild Association of the Wolf of the Steppes. Educational workshops: making of chain-mail, ropes, leather, calligraphy, weaving, embroidery, archery, minting of money… TOQTAI and Lady CARCASS live in a XIIth and XIIIth century yurt in the company of the Wolf, GALINA. Lady PERRINE demonstrates calligraphy. And WULF is a warrior… Banks of the Arly, free access.

la hanse du loups des steppes

More than 35 people from La Ciotat will be present at this Festival (the town of La Ciotat has a holiday centre in Praz sur Arly). You will certainly encounter the following:

the beggars, very disrespectful women reduced to begging, avoid them if possible…

The wine growers, who trample grapes barefoot

The washerwomen, an insult! Don’t hesitate to give them your clothes to clean, or even your feet…

The apothecary – he heals all ills with various different potions.

The main events of Summer 2015

PicMonkey Collage

Every year since 2013,  professionals who work in mountain and tourism activities get together to highlight the wealth of our mountains, be they cultural, sporting or gastronomic. Many of the activities on this day are dedicated to the discovery of the mountains in all its forms.
Rendez-vous at lunchtime in the Belles Leisure Park for a friendly picnic at the Barabelles Snack Bar. In the afternoon, discover the themed  trails: accompanied by guides, go hiking and discover the area surrounding Praz sur Arly. In a short time, you can enjoy exceptional views and even see unexpected flora and fauna! Cani-rando: walking, but pulled by a dog that normally pulls a sled in winter! In summer, thanks to a harness that is tied to your waist, the dog adjusts to your pace. It’s a sport that’s accessible to the whole family! Nordic walking: walking with special poles, discover the pleasure of hiking in the mountains by making your whole body work without effort! Other activities at the Belles Leisure Park: archery, climbing wall, playgrounds…

MB Race

The 5th MB BIKE CULTURE RACE comprises several mountain bike races (ultra/classic, endurance) and the star event is the 140 km ultra-marathon (7,000 metres of altitude difference) – “the most difficult race in the world”. For those who aspire to crossing the finish line, they will have to climb up to the summits of Praz sur Arly before attacking the Lanciers descent to get to the official refreshment and support station in the church square. The ascent of the Plan de l’Aar then completes the list of the main difficulties of this race. Come and cheer on the competitors!

Praz les Arts combines photographers and artists who love scrap metal in the same exhibition: Eric Tops, Rémi Géraudie, Fanny Chabaud, David Malacrida, Olivier Tops, David Machet…  Venues: Town Hall and the Meurets Art Studio, every day from 10.00 to 12.00 and 16.00 to 19.00. Free entry.

A magical evening starting with a paper lantern parade organized by the Schools Association. Everyone will have a coloured lantern for a walk through the woods along the Arly River before joining the place where the fireworks will be let off. Then it’s party time in the church square with a DJ who will set the dance floor alight with a memorable foam party!

BOOK FESTIVAL from 17 to 31 JULY

The first Youth Book Festival will take place from 17 to 31 July 2015. Organized by the National Book Centre, this festival is intended to convey the pleasure of reading to young people, associating books and reading to leisure times and places. In Praz you will discover the Smugglers’ Trail comic strip with Fanfouetomas’s treasure, the “reading logs” literary and creative pathway, the Chantalouette library with “books in trees and reading spots in nature”, the Sapins restaurant’s walking book, the Meurets Art Studio with Chabaud’s adages to read, insect hotels with fun explanatory notes.

The Praz Festival celebrates South America with two groups from Brazil (La La Bahia) and Bolivia (Machaqa) for a day of dancing and unforgettable music. Venue: the Varins tent, from 15.00 to 19.00 and a dinner show at 20.30 with a special menu and entertainment with the groups and the dancers.

sommet du goût

Praz sur Arly has an important gastronomic heritage. The 6 different AOC cheeses produced on its territory will have pride of place at this gourmet event. All day long, producers of gourmet and regional products will be present in the church square to introduce you to their delicious products: waffles, liqueurs, plants, jams, sweets and of course cheese and sausage meats! There will be cooking workshops for the young and demonstrations from a chef for the adults! But you can also discover how mountain cheese is made, visit a farm and enjoy a big musical picnic in the evening and try a menu specially prepared for you to taste the local cuisine!

Jeunes Talents

After Joyce Jonathan, Brice Conrad, Frero Delavega, Loïs, Sorel and Valentin Marceau, the Young Talents Festival invites you once again to discover young bands or singers, possible future stars of the French stage. This year our guests are Nicom, Devon Graves and the group Whities who participated in the “Rising Star” TV show. The church square, with its historic setting, offers an ideal outdoor stage. Meet the artists and and get their autographs after the show! The evening is free!

The mountains are a rich summer holiday destination still largely unknown to the general public. Those that have been are often won over and return! To find yourself in the heart of a still-preserved environment and take care of your body, what a perfect combination to enjoy without moderation!

For one week, the Tourist Office will make every effort for you to discover the wealth of our region combined with your well-being, with lots of activities concentrated in a few days.

Discover the mountains with outdoor nature activities such as botanical trails, themed walks, sporting activities and relaxation, but also through workshops: creation of cosmetic products based on natural products, children’s show with a nature theme, reflexology, fortune-telling, yoga… Praz is still an authentic village with wooden chalets and old Alpine farms dot the landscape! Our primary aim is to develop and educate the public about the mountains and nature and well-being tourism. We live in a unique place, still preserved, and that’s the way we want to keep it!

The village is not a medieval city, there are no castles here, just the desire of a few volunteers with lots of initiative to create a festival. For one weekend, Praz sur Arly transforms itself into a real medieval village! Damsels, knights and beggars strut their stuff in the streets as they did in the time of dragons! Throughout the village, scenes of daily life at the time are recreated such as the bread oven and food stalls. Discover the different shows where the public loudly applauded the troubadours! 200 performers, 40 shows including an equestrian show, 30 stalls, refreshments, etc. Possibility to rent costumes. Free access except for some shows.

End-of-season jumble sale in a fun atmosphere in the centre of the village, exceptionally closed to traffic. Fireworks and dancing in the evening with Animation Sonic in the church square!

A gathering of superb vintage cars organized by the Cheval Mécanique Association of Sallanches. Dozens of different models will take you for a ride in the village of Praz. The 3rd vintage car festival will include collectors’ cars from the 1920s to the present day! Funds raised from rides will be given to Sapaudia for bone marrow donation.
