The Val d’Arly Smugglers’ Trail, Sunday 17 March 2024 – Cancelled due to uncertain weather conditions

The 2024 edition of the Smuggler’s trail is cancelled due to uncertain weather conditions next weekend!

21st SMUGGLERS’ TRAIL, SUNDAY 17 MARCH 2024

Breathtaking scenery, circuits for all levels, and lots of fun – these are the ingredients for the success of this discovery trail. Since 2003, this wonderful discovery walk has been a growing success with the public. The formula is simple: participants take the chairlift up to the summit of the Ban Rouge, where the walk begins, quickly and effortlessly.

There are 3 marked circuits. All along the way, participants will meet smugglers and customs officers who will be watching over them in period costume and with their old-fashioned skis. Some will no doubt try to smuggle in a few regional products: if truth were told, the customs officers are usually not very zealous.

In short, it’s a really fun hike! It’s a chance to meet the locals and enjoy some magical scenery. Finally, a picnic awaits everyone at the finish in Chevan. It’s a simple, non-competitive formula that seems to delight the walkers, who turn up in large numbers every year. A great way to end the winter!

3 DIFFERENT LEVELS OF TRAIL DEPENDING ON YOUR LEVEL

LITTLE SMUGGLERS’ CIRCUIT:  Very easy – About an hour-and-a-half, 2,6 km, walk with 300 metres of negative altitude difference. For occasional walkers and children. Course: https://tracedetrail.fr/fr/trace/trace/175022

> THE MONT DE VORES CIRCUIT:  For regular hikers. About 3 hours’ walk of 7 km (200m of positive and 500m of negative altitude difference). Course: https://tracedetrail.fr/fr/trace/trace/175021

> THE GRAND VERY CIRCUIT:   The longest one for experienced hikers. About 4 hours’ walk of 8 km (300m of positive altitude difference). Course: https://tracedetrail.fr/fr/trace/trace/175018

N.B. :  After the picnic you will still have to walk 200m of positive altitude difference (3/4 of an hour) to get back to the chairlift.

33rd International Montgolfiades – 13 & 14 January 2024

33rd International Montgolfiades, 13 and 14 January 2024

With its ideal aerological conditions, in just a few years the resort of Praz-sur-Arly has become THE place for hot air ballooning in the mountains in France. Hot air balloon flights are possible year-round, thanks to Gérard Issartel and the Alpes Montgolfière team. And, for one weekend in January, a real international ballooning festival awaits you in our little village!

Why a hot air balloon meeting in Praz sur Arly?

In 1990, professional air meeting organizers came to Praz and discovered a large flat area devoid of any construction at the entrance of the village. For them it was the ideal spot for hot air balloons to take off. A year later, the first meeting took place with 12 balloons invited for the event. As of the following year the staff of the Tourist Office organized the event themselves.

In the last 32 years, we have had many well-known male and female Flight Directors for this event: Guy Garcia, Daniel Dupuis known as “Papy”, Jo Roulet and Alain Paris. Flight Director for several years, Jo Roulet, national trainer, is the French reference pilot for mountain flying. This year’s flight director, Alain Paris is also the pilot of the Paris hot-air balloon (the Generali Atmospheric Observatory) as well as Flight Director for the Lille meeting. The Transalpine Challenge began in 2004, the objective being to cover the longest distance in one flight in the heart of the Mont-Blanc Range. In 2006, the TF1 team flew over Mont Blanc and landed in Italy! It has always been possible to inflate the balloons during the week. Several French champions have come to Praz to fly during the Montgolfiades. In 2014, French champion Laure De Coligny was interviewed for the TF1 8 o’clock news in a film shot in Praz sur Arly. The balloons were unable to take off only five times during the Montgolfiades weekend – in 1993, 1999, 2015, 2018 and 2022 – because of weather conditions.

A SPECIAL OCCASION

In 2013 for the film “Salaud, on t’aime“, the Director Claude Lelouch shot images during the weekend and filmed a sequence with Johnny Hallyday in the Praz-sur-Arly hot air balloon.  Claude Lelouch, Patron of the Montgolfiades, is a secondary resident in the village!

HOT-AIR BALLOONING

Leaving from Praz sur Arly, set off on an unforgettable journey in the footsteps of Jules Verne, with a view on the highest peaks in the Alps: the Mont Blanc range, the Aravis, the Beaufortain and the Fiz chain. The flight lasts between 45 minutes and 1h.15 minutes, depending on the day’s weather conditions. The gentleness and slowness of the balloon are unique, making it a truly unforgettable experience. You take off from the hot-air balloon base in Praz, but we don’t know where you’re going to land! A 4×4 car will pick you up and take you back to the departure point.
